1. Main reason is the lack of keyboard. There have been many studies that prove the obvious: you just can't write with it! http://www.usercentric.com/UC/news.asp?ID=386 The virtual keyboard is way too small (and I haven't even got fat fingers!) and you make too many mistakes. What can you do with a phone on which you can't reliable enter text? (Remember that in Greek there is no auto correct function.) Nothing! SMS? Note an appointment? Make notes at a meeting? Forget it! So what exactly would you use it for? A glorified MP3 player?...
2....only it is WAY too expensive. And remember I live in Greece where the local IMC makes sure it is even more expensive. (Recent PC World named the iPod touch "worse peripheral to buy" because of the high price of the local IMC...)
3. Proprietary cabling and connectors. What is wrong with a bog standard mini USB? Absolutely nothing other than the fact that Steve Jobs doesn't make any money out of it! It is soooo nice however to have the same cable for your digital camera, phone, hard disk and whatever else, especially when using a small laptop with only one or two free USB connectors.
4. Usability. Sorry Steve but this is a toy. Even in objective terms, it takes more moves to get something done with the iPhone than with other PDAs. And it is near impossible to do it while walking or moving in any way. (Then again since my old Nokia Communicator 9210 it seems NOTHING is as good at that!)
5. Green issues. Greenpeace says it in detail here - http://www.greenpeace.org/international/news/how-green-is-that-iphone140607 Basically don't pretend to be green when you are only interested in the green dollars flowing into your bank account. Artificial initial pricing also an obvious give away...do you actually enjoy taking advantage of the same people that worship you as a god?
6. No GPS. Are you kidding? Mediocre camera. Why? Maybe you are not quite ready for the major league of consumer electronics Apple.
7. Lack of range of phones. If I select even a single manufacturer like HTC I can choose between dozens of phones based on size, features and whatever else I am concerned with. After all a phone is part of my lifestyle (or so goes the argument when an iPhone fanatic runs out of counter arguments...) so why can't I have a choice?
8. Lack of software. I won't even start with the indignation the whole software industry must have felt by the antics of Steve Jobs regarding the iPhone software, the ridiculous pseudo Safari browser for Windows and all the rest of the charade. End result counts: where is the software for the iPhone? Same place software for Mac is: nowhere! Apple has crushed all reasons for a small software developer to get into the iPhone.
9. Locked in battery? And not even a particularly good one at that judging by its talk time... In 2008 we are used to a much higher level of interchangeability with parts of electronics. I remember seeing a souped up HP iPaq that a friend used when on projects. (He is a herpetologist) He went for weeks or months on end, keeping notes and doing everything out of this extra battery pack! Sure the Apple ecosystem will produce something eventually. But it will be more expensive, much harder to get to (especially outside of the US) and ...proprietary, ie useless for anything else I am up to. Never a good investment.
10. The hype. This is the only weak argument but it is important. In this mixed up infomercial world we live in, when a company like Apple manages to get everyone so much out of balance in terms of fair and objective reporting, we all have a problem. Our already problematic information gathering system will collapse if we keep letting them do it. How many of the above arguments have you read in the printed press or major publications online? Even if you got one or two of them, they were framed with "oh, but it's so cool design" or "who cares, I want one?" or other arguments of equal calibre.
Long live freedom of the blogs. They made ThinkSecret shut up but they can't keep a lid on everyone. Of course this blog entry won't make much difference. Apple fanatics (as if there is any other type of Apple user!) will label me "the enemy" without even reading the whole text, other will gather their disinformative responses to this and everyone will be too busy focusing on Steve Jobs' next big thing, iPhone2 or whatever he announces next week in Mac World. Which will also be overhyped, overpriced, underequipped and generally problematic.
Am I the only one to see a pattern in the way he does things?
